EL1 Strategic Communications Officer

Permanent / Full Time

Lead strategic communication projects, advise senior stakeholders and guide a small team within a high-performing federal government branch.

  • 12 month non-ongoing OR labour-hire engagement
  • South Canberra location + hybrid working
  • Must have APS experience + current clearance
The Role:
Working within a busy federal government communication branch, you will lead the development and delivery of strategic communication activities supporting major policies, programs and government priorities.

This is a broad generalist role requiring strong strategic judgement, leadership and stakeholder management skills. You will oversee complex communication projects, provide trusted advice to senior stakeholders and support a small team to deliver high-quality work across multiple channels.

This role is based in Canberra and not open to other locations. Hybrid working is offered, but the larger part of your week will be in the office.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Leading a small team to develop, implement and evaluate communication strategies.
  • Building trusted relationships with senior policy and program stakeholders.
  • Providing strategic advice on communication planning, audiences, channels and messaging.
  • Overseeing the development of web, social media, video, stakeholder and public-facing content.
  • Managing complex communication projects, resources, suppliers, budgets and contracts.
  • Coordinating consultation, approvals and delivery across multiple business areas.
  • Evaluating communication activities and using insights to improve future approaches.
  • Contributing to branch planning, capability development and continuous improvement.
To be considered for this position, you will need:
  • A current Baseline security clearance or higher.
  • Significant experience delivering strategic communication programs or projects in the Federal Government
  • Demonstrated experience leading staff or guiding multidisciplinary project teams.
  • The ability to provide clear, credible and practical advice to senior stakeholders.
  • Experience managing complex projects, external suppliers, budgets or contracts.
